Created in 1972, Met Council's mission is to eradicate Jewish poverty by implementing solutions that impact social policy. Over the past 30 years, Met Council, has evolved into a multi-faceted social service agency meeting communal needs with a continuum of services and programs.
Description:
Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty is the voice of the Jewish poor and the first line of defense for our community's needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and treat every individual with dignity and respect. Our network of 25 grassroots Jewish Community Councils strengthens families and neighborhoods throughout New York City; and together with our JCC network, we provide a broad array of programs designed to meet the needs of the poor, working-poor, elderly and immigrant residents of our communities. Such programs include crisis intervention, career services, housing, a kosher food pantry, home services, home care, and low cost health insurance.
History:
In 1972, community advocates founded Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty in an effort to improve the lives of tens of thousands of New Yorkers living in poverty due to changing neighborhoods and demographics. Today, Met Council is one of New York City's largest social service providers.
