Miracle House
Miracle House provides affordable lodging, meals and volunteer advocacy support to patients and their caregivers traveling to NYC for critical medical treatment.
Description and/or History:
Miracle House provides a welcoming, safe haven for those traveling to the city for medical treatment. We have patients that stay with us 1 day and some that stay with us up to 1 year. Volunteers assist in all program services to our visitors, acting as welcoming hosts, meal hosts and friendly supporters. We also have several administrative projects that use volunteer help and fund-raising projects including auctions, benefits, and major events in Manhattan, East Hampton and Fire Island.
History: In 1990, during the height of the AIDS epidemic among gay men, three friends met and discussed a common goal. They wanted to provide those struggling with AIDS the dignity and compassion needed to face this devastating disease. Driven by this commitment they did what no one else had thought to do: they created affordable and supportive housing for families and friends traveling to New York City to care for a loved one with AIDS. In the mid to late 90's, new drug therapies radically improved the health of people affected by HIV/AIDS and reduced the medical crisis among them. In 1997, Miracle House expanded its' mission to include those with any illness. Miracle House has made a seamless transition to caring for this new population, while preserving the original commitment to people living with AIDS. Over the last 14 years, Miracle House has served over 3,300 individuals from around the world. While Miracle House preserves its founding commitment to the families of people living with AIDS, the expansion has been an opportunity for us to build on years of successful service.
