Central Park SummerStage presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City. The artists represent a breadth of genres and cultures and perform in an outdoor setting accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. SummerStage strives to develop audiences' deepening appreciation for contemporary, traditional, and emerging artists as well as the communities in which these artists originate.
Description:
Our volunteer program has been an integral part of Central Park SummerStage for over a decade, with thousands of supporters devoting their time and energy to making SummerStage a world-renowned festival. Volunteers are the public face of SummerStage, performing a wide variety of tasks at all of our performances, including donation solicitation, brochure distribution, and providing information about our season. Volunteers also help out in the office throughout the year, assisting in various administrative and clerical duties.
History:
Central Park SummerStage, a program of the City Parks Foundation, is New York's premier free performing arts festival. Founded in 1986, it brings performances of superior artistic caliber, free of charge, to socially and economically diverse audiences. Through inclusive and varied programming, SummerStage provides an important forum for emerging and established artists and ideas, and exposes its audiences to many different types of artistic and cultural expression. Its programming areas include dance and performance, American and world music, and spoken word. The festival runs during the months of June, July, and August, and presents approximately 30-35 free performing events. Over its 20+ seasons, it has drawn more than 5 million fans to its home at Central Park's Rumsey Playfield.
