The LIC Community Boathouse's free educational and recreational kayaking and canoeing programs are reconnecting NYC residents and businesses with the East River and NY Harbor. Increasing enjoyment of our estuary system justifies committing greater resources toward its ecological recovery and public accessibility.
Description:
The LIC Community Boathouse core mission is to provide free kayak tours of the East River from Anable Cove in Hunters Point and free canoe rides in Hallets Cove in Astoria. Some of our tours feature guest history and ecology lecturers, while others are designed to highlight the arts communities on the East River. Our kayaks are sit-on-top tandems designed for novices and we plan trips to work with the currents to minimize strain. Our canoe rides in Hallets Cove carry up to two public paddlers along with a volunteer guide. The boathouse also engages in other activities (such as contributing to books, sponsoring science and urban studies projects for students, promoting innovative waterfront designs, etc.) and organizes occasional paddles in other locations.
History:
The LIC Community Boathouse was formed in early 2004 and linked with the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club for insurance and to secure a nonprofit fiscal conduit. We began educational programs in early 2005 and paddling programs in the spring.
