Housing Works Used Book Cafe is a non-profit bookstore and cafe located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. All proceeds from the sale of donated books, CDs and records go to support Housing Works, Inc., a non-profit service agency that provides housing, healthcare, job placement, advocacy, and more to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.
Description:
Along with selling books, CDs, records and cafe items, the Used Book Cafe holds concerts, readings, panels, and other special events as part of its effort to raise funds and increase visibility for the programs of Housing Works, Inc. The Used Book Cafe relies on the services of more than 80 volunteers to staff our sales floor, front register, and cafe. We also offer many other volunteer opportunities, including event staffing, administrative work and other special projects. We are always looking for more volunteers - there is no limit to the number we can accommodate. The Used Book Cafe is more than 80% volunteer staffed, making it one of the most innovative bookstores in the country.
History:
Housing Works was founded in 1990 as an outgrowth of the Housing Committee of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). Over the last eleven years, Housing Works has become a strong and fierce provider of housing and supportive services to homeless people with HIV and AIDS, and has become the leading advocate in New York City--and a recognized leader nationwide--for the rights of this constituency.
