In the Spirit of the Children, Inc (ITSOC)is a not-for-profit youth service agency located in Harlem, New York. Our mission is to increase the chances of successful adulthood for young adults exiting foster care and reduce risk factors such as homelessness and poor parenting skills that threaten a positive adult lifestyle.
Description:
In the Spirit of the Children,Inc. Youth Transition Empowerment Program provides employment, education, housing and training services to economically and socially disadvantaged youth who are transitioning out of foster care to live on their own. Youth leaving foster care are usually woefully unprepared to make a successful transition to living independently. Every day foster care youth are discharged from foster care into some of our city’s poorest and most risky neighborhoods to uncertain futures and without adequate support services.
History:
In the Spirit of the Children officially opened in February of 2003, and began delivering services to youth ages 18 to 23 exiting foster care through our Youth Transition Empowerment Program (YTEP). Each of the young adults seeking assistance are provided with one or more of the following services: GED attainment, Employment, Housing, Social Services and Social development.
