| Last updated on March 20, 2008 |
LIFEbeat is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to reaching America's youth with the message of HIV/AIDS prevention. Recognizing that music has always played a significant role in the lives of young people, LIFEbeat mobilizes the talents and resources of the music industry to raise awareness and to provide support to the AIDS community.
Description:
Founded in 1992, LIFEbeat's Tour Outreach program brings life saving HIV prevention materials into concert and club venues across the country in an effort to educate young music fans about HIV/AIDS. Every year LIFEbeat's Hearts & Voices produces an average of 250 shows, bringing the gift of live music to people living with AIDS at hospitals, hospices, residential facilities and treatment centers around New York City. Each week talented musicians from all musical genres volunteer their time to perform for people living with AIDS. General volunteers attend shows, visit with patients to encourage participation, help set up the performance space and distribute small gifts. All LIFEbeat volunteers are required to attend a 3 hour training which reviews HIV/AIDS basic knowledge and describes all of LIFEbeat's current volunteer opportunities. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have their parents sign a consent form before attending the training.
History:
In 1992 the music industry had not yet addressed the AIDS crisis with a unified voice although many of its members has succumbed to the disease. Bob Caviano, a respected music manager, wrote an editorial in Billboard magazine disclosing his illness and challenging the industry to take action. A number of high-level executives heeded his call and formed LIFEbeat - The Music Industry Fights AIDS. Since then LIFEbeat has been instrumental in helping to bring the message of prevention to millions of young fans across the country by producing concerts and events and by going on tour with artists to increase AIDS awareness.
