Seaside Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

| Last updated on September 24, 2007 |
Seaside Therapeutic Riding is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to teaching horseback riding and Equine studies to children and adults with disabilities. WE OFFER PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF TO BOTH SUBWAY AND BUSES.
Description:
With the help of skilled horses, a team of certified instructors, and volunteers, students are taught horsemanship skills appropriate for their age and level of ability. In addition, students are taught the foundations of equine behavior and proper equine care. Our riding program offers children and adults with special needs the chance to experience horseback riding. This experience is not possible for children with disabilities without specially trained instructors, horses and equipment.
History:
Seaside Therapeutic Riding, Inc. located at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy in Brooklyn, was created in 2004. It is a fully accredited center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). The program is under the direction of Dan Cutler, NARHA Certified Riding Instructor. The program is in operation several days a week including week-ends. We serve approximately 50 students and are supported by 35 loyal volunteers. We continue to grow and our need for volunteers continues to grow! Our program can only exist with the help of Volunteers such as you.

Overall Experience
Rewarding
 |
I have been volunteering at Seaside for three years, and I have seen changes in students that you would not believe. They get treated as students not patients. They are there to learn to ride, and get exercise as a reward. Students clean horses to stretch, and then ride for a half an hour. Students of all different stages of different handicaps come in and have remarkable changes. To watch students get better and work with horses at the same time is the best thing you can do. posted on September 5, 2006 |
Overall Experience
It was a life-altering experience in many ways!
 |
I began volunteering with Seaside Therapeutic Riding in Brooklyn about a year ago. Since then, I have logged over 100 hours and I loved every minute of it. I brushed up on stale riding skills and I learned so much about the capabilities of people with physical and mental challenges. They never cease to amaze me with their enthusiasm for riding and their unmistakable connection with the horses. I have truly seen what I an only describe as monumental changes in our students as a result of their exposure to the world of horseback riding. posted on September 7, 2005 |

This program has very patient teachers/leaders and we are learning all aspects of riding and horse care, which we will be able to pass on and help the students enrolled in the program. I am loving every minute of it!! posted by Marrock8 on August 25, 2005 |
