The mission of POTS is to be a loving community in the Bronx that nourishes the basic needs and hungers of all who come to our door. One way we do that is by feeding people. Another way is through recognizing the dignity, individuality and value of each and every one of our guests.
Description:
POTS runs a soup kitchen, food pantry, clothing closet, a temporary residence for men, a shower service, haircuts free of cost, a mailing address, a medical clinic, a legal clinic, case management, counseling, a community development group People Advocating New Solutions (PANS) and we hope to start construction on our dental clinic soon. We primarily use volunteers in our community kitchen. We like to have 6 volunteers at all times, because then the volunteers are not as rushed and have time to converse with our guests. Often, a quick conversation (sometimes a long one), a smile or a kind word can be more nourishing than the food people receive in the kitchen. Hospitality is our goal.
History:
POTS was founded in 1982 in a small store front on Fordham Road in the Bronx as a soup kitchen in every sense of the word. It served soup 365 days a year because that was all they could afford to make. In 1985 POTS bought a larger location. They started the men's residence and the PANS program. Since 1999 the program has grown drastically. The number of people we served in the pantry grew nearly exponentially and the number of people eating in the kitchen exploded. A few years back we bought a second building to house the legal and medical clinics. POTS is growing as the need grows. We are a community serving community needs.
