| Last updated on November 3, 2008 |
Founded in 1961, The International Center in New York is a privately funded, unique language learning Center for immigrants and other newcomers to New York City. Among the members in our international community are immigrants, US Citizens, refugees, asylees, diplomats, visiting business professionals, international students, temporary visitors and families.
Description:
With a small full time staff of 13 and about 1,000 volunteers, we offer the region's largest One-to-one Partnership Program, a variety of Discussion and Lecture classes, Structured Eight to Ten Week English courses, Practical skills training workshops, and Cultural programs that help more than 2,300 members acquire the confidence to speak English and receive some of the support necessary to build satisfying new lives in the United States. We are also expanding our programs to reach more immigrants in their New York City communities through our collaborations with various non-profit organizations. The Center is unique because it encourages volunteers to share both their personal and professional skills in a variety of ways. In January 2005, Time Out New York selected our organization as one of the 65 best places to volunteer in NYC.
