Reach Out and Read of Greater New York's mission is to provide the training and resources necessary to put books into the hands and homes of every young child.
Description:
Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give free books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between families and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading. ROR of Greater New York represents 63 area hospitals and community health centers with more than 120 sites in the five boroughs of New York City, as well as in Westchester and Long Island, providing books at approximately 184,000 well child visits per year. Also joining the initiative are a number of community based literacy and health related organizations.
