Since 2002, fresh art has had volunteers hand-sew sock monkeys for the organization to sell in order to benefit its craft workshops for people with special needs, in particular homeless (or formerly homeless) men and women. (see volunteer opportunities with special needs populations below). Every other Monday evening from 6:30-8 p.m., volunteers meet at the fresh art/HAI office (we have donated desk space within another non-profit: HAI)to hand sew the monkeys. We provide all the materials, and no experience is necessary. The sock monkeys are sold via fresh art's website (www.freshartnyc.org-"gift shop") and the proceeds are applied to continuing our sock monkey sewing workshops at shelters and supportive housing facilities. Another volunteer opportunity(once the skills of sock monkey sewing are mastered-usually after 3 sessions) is to volunteer to assist or to teach a four to ten week sock monkey workshop at one of the shelters or supportive housing facilities fresh art works with on a regular basis. Experience with working with special needs populations is helpful but not required. Those interested in teaching or assisting with these workshops have to attend at least six of the regular sock monkey sewing Mondays sessions in order to qualify for this opportunity. The workshops for special needs populations are usually one and a half hours on a week night or on Saturdays. Please check fresh art's web site home page for dates of the next sock monkey sewing group and dates for our other activities. www.freshartnyc.org
There are no requirements for joining the Monday evening sock monkey group. This opportunity is sponsored by: fresh art
