ERDA Schools Speaker Series: Inspiring Kids to Dream Big!

Do you remember who inspired you as a child? Was it a teacher, doctor, or journalist, or maybe a professional who came to speak at your school?

ERDA invites you to be that inspiration.

The ERDA Schools Speaker Series seeks to inspire children to believe that they can be anything they want to be. We partner with four Long Island City public elementary schools where a significant number of students live in nearby public housing developments, and each month we bring a different speaker to each school to talk to the fifth grade about his or her career.

Are you willing to take 1 hour out of your workday to talk to fifth graders about your career? If so, you would be perfect for the ERDA Schools Speaker Series. The Speaker Series takes place every Friday through May, at 9am or 1pm, so we can definitely find a day that fits your schedule. You can speak at just one school, or you can speak at all 4—the time commitment is up to you. All of the schools are located in Long Island City, less than 10 minutes from mid-town Manhattan.

Each speaker will be asked to provide a brief biography which is distributed to the students and added to their "Dream-Building Binder," a collection of biographies and notes about intriguing speakers and careers. At the end of the year, students are asked to reflect on the many careers they have learned about over the year and to personalize it in an essay.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
