Volunteering at Exodus Transitional Community, Inc. has changed my life and my family's life...I started out as a mentor with the Abyssinian Program and it was my first time talking to someone who had been in prison. I was scared to death. A friend talked me into it and I didn't want to seem like a coward. I went the first night to a group they had for men and women who had been in prison before and were trying to make a new life out here. I went home crying. The people I met were just like me. Some of them had done some of the things I did, and because of where they lived, they got arrested and went to prison. Some of them went in as teenagers and came out in their forties. I didn't think people were allowed to be locked up that long. Some of them didn't know how to use a metrocard or a cell phone or a computer. And they were NICE!!! After a few months, I talked my daughter into being a mentor for a woman and they became the best of friends." (Wants to be anonymous) We are looking for dedicated adults to mentor children between 6-18 who have an incarcerated parent, or in some cases, two parents. We are asking for a minimum of four hours a month, for one year. We provide training and support. We are also looking for lifecoaches for formerly incarcerated adults who are willing to commit to training and a one year commitment to either facilitate a workshop as a community lifecoach, or to engage in a one-to-one lifecoaching relationship. We can also use students and adults who need to fulfill an internship to volunteer in the fiscal management, administration/clerical, and program areas.
You must be atleast 21 to mentor, 18 to intern. You must also be able to navigate the three flights of stairs to our office. Bilingual skills are a plus, but our main requirement is that you are committed. Once approved, you must also pass the background check (ex-felons are NOT exempt but are considered on a case by case basis) and agree to an orientation training (2 hours) and 4 quarterly ongoing trainings, once every three months. This opportunity is sponsored by: Exodus Transitional Community, Inc.
