Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Work with adults whose levels range from non-readers to mid-level to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills

Meet with small groups of students for at least three hours a week at a center

OR

Help high-beginning to intermediate level English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) practice their speaking and listening skills

Meet with groups of up to ten students for at least one ninety-minute conversation session a week

Plan lessons to connect learning to life using real life materials such as checks, job applications and product labels

Provide sessions that vary in content and technique, utilizing professional support, training and resources

Incorporate technology into group activities and projects for students to develop computer literacy skills

Participate in additional learning activities and projects

Have a high school diploma or higher
Adhere to the program philosophy
Attend all required volunteer training
Commit at least three months to the program
Speak English fluently
Have patience, flexibility, and desire to help

 From Manhattan and Points West Take the Midtown Tunnel to the Long Island Expressway to the Grand Central Parkway East. Exit Grand Central at Parsons Boulevard. Ride along service road to traffic light (Parsons Boulevard). Turn right; continue south to Hillside Avenue. Make a left turn onto Hillside and continue to Merrick Boulevard. Turn right onto Merrick.
