Each year approximately 1,000 youth transition out of New York City’s foster care system. Many of these young people leave care without the safety net of family members or other constant caring adults in their lives and are left to fend for themselves with very few financial resources and other supports to maintain stable housing, complete their education and secure a productive future as adults. As a volunteer mentor, you can help prevent these problems by serving as a caring adult role model to a young person who is eager for support. Through your involvement, you will become a welcome coach – someone who will guide them in learning the skills they need to manage their finances, set educational and career goals, and save for their future once they leave foster care!
